Lori woke with the strange sensation of floating, taking in the peculiar translucent-ivory moonlight as it stirred about the bedroom, restless, haunted and haunting. She wondered what had awakened her.

Then she heard … she felt … a thrum, pulsing through the bed. What was it?

“Cayuse,” Nathan  whispered as he edged out of bed, pulled on his jeans and shirt, and hurried out of the bedroom and down the stairs.

Lori watched him wordlessly, then slipped from the bed and crept out onto the balcony. Peering through the ancient magnolias that lined the driveway, across to the far hillside where the alabaster moon cast mystical shadows and light, she saw the shadowy forms of horses, tearing along the ridge of the hill.

Within moments, Nathan and the hired hand raced from the barn on horseback, headed for the hillside.

Why were they chasing the wild horses? Lori wondered. She was new to ranch life—when she met Nathan she didn’t know a bridle bit from a saddle horn.

But that night, the night the cayuse were captured, changed Lori’s life forever.…
